HOMAGE and Zippo® have teamed up to commemorate the early days of an icon.

Zippo was founded in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1932 when George G. Blaisdell decided to create a lighter that would look good and be easy to use. Fascinated by another recent invention, the zipper, Blaisdell called his new lighter "Zippo", and backed it with a lifetime guarantee.

The 1941 heritage model closely replicates the design of the original both inside and out.

In the late 1950s, the University of Nevada Las Vegas adopted as its mascot a wolf wearing a scarlet-and-gray Confederate uniform. The nickname “Rebels” was given to UNLV’s athletic teams because the school, emerging from the shadow of the University of Nevada, Reno, in effect “rebelled” against its bigger and older brother to the north. Though the mascot has evolved into a modern-day mountain man, the university continues to proudly display its scarlet and gray.

After routing Duke by 30 points to win the 1990 NCAA Championship, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels entered the 1990-91 season ranked #1 in nearly every poll. The Rebels went 27-0 during the regular season and rolled through regional play in the NCAA tournament before a rematch with Duke in the Final Four. The Blue Devils’ 79-77 loss ended UNLV’s season with a record of 34-1, but the Rebels sent five players to the NBA and has been billed as one of the greatest college basketball teams of all time.

Ten Cent Beer Night was a promotion held during a game between the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on June 4, 1974. The idea behind the promotion was to offer as many eight-ounce cups of Stroh's beer as the fans could drink for just 10¢ each, thus increasing ticket sales.

In the ninth inning, a fan attempted to steal Texas outfielder Jeff Burroughs' cap. Confronting the fan, Burroughs tripped, and Texas manager Billy Martin (thinking that Burroughs had been attacked) charged onto the field, his players right behind, some wielding bats. A large number of intoxicated fans - some armed with knives, chains, and portions of stadium seats that they had torn apart - surged onto the field, and others hurled bottles from the stands. Ken Aspromonte, the Indians' manager, ordered his players to grab bats and help the Rangers.

The bases were pulled up and stolen and many rioters threw a vast array of objects including cups, rocks, bottles, batteries from radios, hot dogs, popcorn containers, and folding chairs. As a result, umpire crew chief Nestor Chylak, realizing that order would not be restored in a timely fashion, forfeited the game to Texas. He later called the fans "uncontrollable beasts" and stated that he'd never seen anything like what had happened, "except in a zoo".

A riot squad from the Cleveland Police Department finally arrived to restore order.

The 25,134 fans in attendance (the past season's average attendance had been 8,000) chugged down an estimated 60,000 cups of beer.

Now, for a limited time, purchase this special stadium cup in honor of the 37th anniversary of the <strike>best</strike> worst promotion in the history of baseball!

Disco Demolition Night was a promotional event that took place on Thursday, July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. It was held during the twi-night doubleheader baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers.

Chicago disc jockey Steve Dahl devised a promotion that involved people bringing unwanted disco music records to the game in exchange for an admission fee of 98¢. The records would be collected, placed in a large crate in center field, and blown up by Dahl.

Disco Demolition Night is regarded as the culmination of a backlash against disco music that had an effect on the decline of the genre.

In the early 1970s, Major League Baseball players seldom, if ever, wore facial hair. The practice had been widespread in the 19th century, but by the early 20th century it was rare for a player to sport a mustache or beard. As detailed in the book Mustache Gang, Oakland Athletics owner Charlie Finley decided to hold a mustache-growing contest within his team. When the A's faced the Cincinnati Reds, whose team rules forbade facial hair, in the 1972 World Series, the media dubbed the series as "the hairs vs. the squares". Thanks in part to the on-field success of the A's in the early 1970s, along with changing fashions, facial hair has again become very common among baseball players.

To say Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon had a flair for the dramatic would be a gross understatement. It’s true that McMahon had to wear the dark sunglasses for medical reasons, but the headbands were all flash. When NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle fined McMahon in 1985 for wearing a headband with an unauthorized corporate logo, the following week McMahon responded with a plain white headband emblazoned simply with “ROZELLE” in black marker. In Super Bowl XX, McMahon wore a “JDF Cure” headband to bring attention to juvenile Diabetes before switching to “POW-MIA” and finally “Pluto” (the nickname of a friend with a brain tumor).

I'm the punky QB, known as McMahon.
When I hit the turf, I've got no plan.
I just throw my body all over the field.
I can't dance, but I can throw the pill.
I motivate the cats, I like to tease.
I play so cool, I aim to please.
That's why you all got here on the double
To catch me doin' the Super Bowl Shuffle.

A portion of this headband's proceeds benefits The Lynda McMahon Ferguson Memorial Foundation for Literacy.
Bertman Ball Park Mustard is a rich, smooth, old world style brown mustard near and dear to the hearts (and stomachs) of Clevelanders for over three generations of sports and food fans.

Joseph Bertman originally made the mustard in the garage behind his house in the Kinsman neighborhood in Cleveland. He made it primarily for League park, which was one of his best customers. He made it in glass gallon jars which were returned, washed and reused.

Bertman continued to sell it to League Park and naturally carried it over to Municipal stadium when it opened. The concessions in the ballpark remained customers for the entire time Municipal stadium was open.

When Jacobs Field opened, Bertman Mustard was there. Even at Progressive Field, Bertman continues to partner with the Indians!
Easily one of sports’ most intriguing and electrifying figures of the 1960s and ‘70s, King became the first tennis player (male or female) and the first female athlete ever to be named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, in 1972. By founding the Women’s Tennis Association in 1973, King helped unite all of women's professional tennis in one tour, increasing financial opportunities not only in tennis but across women's sports.

The 1980-81 Indiana won five NCAA tournament games by an average margin of 23 points, but the Hoosiers were far from invincible. In fact, the team lost nine games before finishing the year on a ten-game winning streak. During a two-week stretch Indiana lost to Kentucky, Notre Dame and North Carolina, and during a trip to Hawaii dropped games to Clemson and Pan American. En route from Hawaii, Knight ran into North Carolina's Dean Smith in an airport and they both lamented how poorly their teams were playing. Neither legendary coach would have suspected that the Hoosiers and Tar Heels would play for the national championship three months later.

With six seconds to play and Boston College down 45-41 to the University of Miami, BC quarterback Doug Flutie called “55 Flood Tip,” in which all his wide receivers ran straight routes to the end zone. Flutie took the snap and scrambled right, heaving a Hail Mary pass from his own 37-yard line. Flutie’s pass fell directly into the waiting arms of Eagles receiver Gerard Phelan, who fell to the ground in the end zone for a 47-45 Boston College victory.

Flutie passed for 472 yards and four touchdowns in “The Miami Miracle” and won the Heisman trophy shortly afterward. BC would finish the season with a win over Houston in the Cotton Bowl, but wouldn’t defeat Miami again until 2007.

With 51 seconds remaining in the 1982 NFC Championship Game, the Cowboys led Clark’s 49ers 27-21. The play—“Red Right Tight Sprint Right Option”—saw Clark cut left across the end zone, stop, and immediately reverse his path to the right.

49er quarterback Joe Montana scrambled and fired high to the back of the end zone, and Clark leapt higher than Cowboys cornerback Everson Wells, snaring the ball with his fingertips for the go-ahead touchdown.

Clark finished the game with 120 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches, but none more important than “The Catch".

"Club Trillion is an exclusive club founded in 2007 by three very handsome and very financially well-off Ohio State basketball players--Kyle Madsen (#15), Danny Peters (#13), and myself.

We named ourselves "Club Trillion" because, as athletically limited white folk, we found ourselves riding the bench for the Buckeyes. When the time came for us to get in, there would usually only be 1 minute remaining in the game, and after sitting down for 39 minutes, we really had no interest in trying to be all that productive.

So we devised the plan of trying to get the "trillion", which occurs when we play 1 minute and do absolutely nothing that would appear in the box score, thus making our stat line say 1 minute played followed by a bunch of zeroes.

I know what you are saying to yourself right now. You are saying, 'That is side-splittingly hilarious. These guys are probably just a comical party waiting to happen...'

You are absolutely right."

Following each Ohio State win at Ohio Stadium, members of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity ring the victory bell for 15 minutes or up to a half-hour for wins over Michigan.

The tradition is over 50 years old, first occuring on October 2, 1954 against California. The bell was a gift from the classes of 1943, 1944 and 1945, weighing 2,420 pounds.

The practice of awarding helmet stickers began in 1968 when Ernie Biggs, a trainer under legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes, came up with the idea to reward both individual and team performances with stickers resembling buckeye leaves.

During the magical fall of '68, the Bucks capped an undefeated season with a dominating 50-14 victory over arch-rival Michigan and a come-from-behind 27-16 victory over Southern California in the 1969 Rose Bowl to secure the national title!

The City of Pittsburgh has many nicknames, but “City of Champions” seems the most fitting, especially in the 1970s when the name was coined. In that prolific decade, Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell led the Pirates to two of their five World Series, the Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” won four Super Bowls, and a 12-0 Pitt team won a national championship behind Heisman winner Tony Dorsett. Add the Penguins’ Stanley Cup dominance in the early ‘90s, and you’ve got a city with as strong a sporting tradition as any in the country.

The North Shore. Oahu. “Pipeline.” According to experts, it’s the world’s most photographed and filmed wave by far. Perhaps that’s also because of a well-earned reputation as the world’s premier tube – and most dangerous surf spot. Once called Banzai Beach, a pretty good moniker for the towering sets crashing onto an uber shallow reef of lava caves, in the early Sixties it was boardmaker Mike Diffenderfer who noticed the spot’s waves resembled the giant concrete pipes being used in a nearby road project. Before long, the “Banzai Pipeline” became known as the sport’s ultimate break and, many would claim, the ultimate test of a surfer’s courage, skill and luck.

Surf Ohio salutes “Pipeline” and the legacy of the famous barrel riders who have mastered it with this Longboard Legends Collection limited-edition of 100 hand-crafted 23” surfboards. Each is numbered and signed by Ron Kaplan and arrives ready-to-hang in your tiki bar, beach house, office, or wherever you hang ten.
You get what you expect from the sobriquet—inside linebacker Nick Buoniconti is the only Hall of Famer among the regulars, who allowed 12.2 points per game in ’72 and 10.7 in ’73, propelling the Dolphins to wins in Super Bowls VII and VIII.

For a guy who didn’t play American football until three years before he entered the NFL, “The Nigerian Nightmare” certainly proved he was difficult to tackle on the playing field. Even more difficult was bringing down Okoye in 1991’s Tecmo Super Bowl—he had a 94 “hitting power” rating, which meant he was essentially invincible!

With neon hot-rod racing graphics as a source of inspiration, Ron Kaplan crafted this gem on his light box in the spring of 1985. This would be the 8th edition of his iconic Surf Ohio series that lasted from 1978 to 1996.

1985 also marked the first year of the now infamous Surf Ohio Bash. Club 51, a rustic bar and live music club on the coast of Buckeye Lake, was the venue selected for the festivities. About 700 patrons--twice the club's legal capacity--experienced a weekend of shenanigans on the lake.

The Surf Ohio bash would eventually move to Wyandot Lake, entertaining thousands of guests with wave pools, bikini contents and mechanical surf boards.

After the 1984 Detroit Tigers opened their season with a 35-5 start, local sportscaster Al Ackerman dubbed the team "Bless You Boys." When the Tigers clinched the ’84 American League pennant (after leading the AL East wire-to-wire), manager Sparky Anderson wrote the following in his journal: “I’ve waited for this day since they fired me in Cincinnati. I think they made a big mistake when they did that. Now no one will ever question me again.” The ’84 Tigers downed the Padres 4-1 to win the franchise’s fourth World Series, and Anderson’s journal was later published under the title Bless You Boys: Diary of the Detroit Tigers’ 1984 Season.

"...That's right...Bless You Boys! This is the year...Detroit is gonna party, Tiger fever is here...Bless you boys..."

For 80 years, the “Baseball Palace of the World” stood at 35th Street and Shields Avenue in Chicago’s South Side, home to the White Sox and more than 6,000 major league games. Built on a former dump that Sox founder and owner Charles Comiskey bought in 1909, Comiskey Park was only the fourth concrete-and-steel stadium in the majors and had an initial seating capacity of 29,000, which expanded throughout the years to nearly 44,000 by the time it closed in 1990.

After eight fruitless years in Milwaukee, the 1982 Brewers won 95 games and their first (and only) American League pennant, leading the league in both runs and home runs. Because of the team’s abundant offense (Cecil Cooper, Ben Ogilve and Gorman Thomas each hit over 30 home runs and Robin Yount hit 29; all four went for 100+ RBI), they were dubbed “Harvey’s Wallbangers” after manager Harvey Kuenn.

After facing years of relocation rumors, the 1995 Seattle Mariners finished first in the American League West and faced the wild-card Yankees in the ALDS. Facing elimination in the 11th inning of a deciding Game 5, Edgar Martinez laced a double down the left-field line; Joey Cora scored from third as Ken Griffey Jr. raced from first to home, beating Bernie Williams’ throw and sending the Mariners to their first ALCS in franchise history.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Dave Niehaus, who called Mariners games for 33 years, punctuated the moment with an emphatic cry that still reverberates throughout the Pacific Northwest: “the Mariners are going to play for the American League Championship! I don't believe it! It just continues! My oh my!”

After only 13 seasons of sponsoring the sport, Wright State University’s men’s basketball team won the 1982-83 NCAA Division II title with a record of 24-8. Under head coach Ralph Underhill, the Raiders’ averaged a double-digit margin of victory through the regionals and handily dispatched the University of the District of Columbia 92-73 in the finals. It was the first and last Division II title for Wright State, as the program made the jump to Division I into 1987 (and qualified for the NCAA tournament in ’93 and ’07).
The pair began promoting contests and events, and in 1989, Lorimer and Schwarzenegger founded the Arnold Classic (now called the Arnold Sports Festival), which has evolved into one of the largest fitness expos in the world. The Festival welcomes more than 180,000 athletes annually who compete in nearly 50 events, including 12 Olympic sports. Along with the Mr. Olympia competition, the Arnold Festival is considered the most lucrative strongman event in the world.
Philly guard Hal Greer lobbed a pass to the sideline, but Boston’s John Havlicek leaped, got a hand on the pass, and tipped it backward to Sam Jones. Jones tossed it back to Hondo in the corner, and he heaved up a meaningless shot as the Boston faithful mobbed the parquet floor and legendary Celtics announcer Johnny Most wailed, “Havlicek stole the ball! It’s all over!”

In 1961, Major League Baseball granted Gene “The Singing Cowboy” Autry an expansion franchise, the Los Angeles Angels. In the team’s first year, the Angels finished 70-91, with the highest winning percentage (.435) of any expansion team.

The Angels shared Dodger Stadium until ’65, when they moved 30 miles south to Anaheim, became the California Angels, and became neighbors with Mickey Mouse. The Angels drew nearly 1.5 million fans in their inaugural year in Anaheim, but didn’t reach the playoffs until 1979, led by Rod Carew and AL MVP Don Baylor.

Prior to the Angels’ 2002 World Series victory, many people claimed that the team suffered from the “Curse of the Cowboy” and that Angel Stadium was supposedly built on a Native American burial ground. Given the team’s run of success in the 2000s (six postseason appearances and a World Championship), it’s safe to say those theories have been debunked.

Unquestionably the centerpiece of early American history, Philadelphia’s name (and nickname) derives from the Greek words philos (“love”) and adelphos (“brother”). The city was the home of the Declaration of Independence and served as the temporary capital of the United States in the late eighteenth century.

Nearly 200 years later, in 1980, Philadelphia became the only North American city in which all four of its major sports teams (the Eagles, 76ers, Flyers and Phillies) played for their respective championships in the same year!
