Disco Demolition Night

Disco Demolition Night was a promotional event that took place on Thursday, July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. It was held during the twi-night doubleheader baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers.

Chicago disc jockey Steve Dahl devised a promotion that involved people bringing unwanted disco music records to the game in exchange for an admission fee of 98�. The records would be collected, placed in a large crate in center field, and blown up by Dahl.

After the first game, Dahl, dressed in army fatigues and helmet, proceeded to center field. The large box containing the collected records was rigged with explosives. Dahl led the crowd in chants of "disco sucks" and a countdown prior to triggering the explosives. When detonated, the explosives tore a hole in the outfield grass surface and a small fire began burning. Dahl and his cohorts hopped into a jeep circling the warning track before leaving the field through the right-centerfield exit. Thousands of fans immediately rushed the field. Some lit more fires and started small-scale riots. The batting cage was pulled down and wrecked and the bases were literally stolen, along with chunks of the field itself.

Disco Demolition Night is regarded as the culmination of a backlash against disco music that had an effect on the decline of the genre.

Phi Slama Jama, a dunking fraternity, was coined by former Houston Post sportswriter Thomas Bonk in a 1983 article describing The Cougars' explosive, fast-breaking style of play that emphasized athleticism over fundamental skills.

The "above the rim" Houston squad included greats like Hakeem "Dream" Olajuwon, Benny "Bomber from Bernice" Anders, Clyde "Glide" Drexler, Larry "Mr. Mean" Micheaux & Michael "Silent Assassin" Young.

Each box includes:

All of the funds raised, after expenses, will benefit a scholarship fund honoring Fred R. Taylor, the head coach of the 1960 Championship team.

Established on May 7, 1976 by friends and associates in honor of the late coach, the annual income is used to provide one or more scholarships for undergraduate and/or graduate students who have indicated a desire to pursue a career in baseball or basketball coaching.

Fred Taylor (1924-2002) served as head coach of The Ohio State Men�s Basketball team from 1959 to 1976. Known as an adept recruiter, a talented coach, and a guiding presence to those who knew him, Taylor was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986.

On game days in '68, my Grandpa Murray used to wear a button on his lapel for good luck. While Rex Kern & Jack Tatum might have had something to do with the success of that season, I believe it was Grandpa Murray's button that made all the magic possible.

Some years later, Murray's button has found its way onto one of the most incredible Ohio State tees ever. Much respect to the 1968 Buckeye squad!

The Columbus Chill began play in 1991 as an expansion franchise in the East Coast Hockey League. It would take the team two seasons to reach the playoffs, doing so in 1994 under coach Terry Ruskowski. The Chill would go on to win two conference championships and make the playoffs for five of the eight seasons. In 1999, the team left Columbus becoming the Reading Royals.

With neon hot-rod racing graphics as a source of inspiration, Ron Kaplan crafted this gem on his light box in the spring of 1985. This would be the 8th edition of his iconic Surf Ohio series that lasted from 1978 to 1996.

1985 also marked the first year of the now infamous Surf Ohio Bash. Club 51, a rustic bar and live music club on the coast of Buckeye Lake, was the venue selected for the festivities. About 700 patrons--twice the club's legal capacity--experienced a weekend of shenanigans on the lake.

The Surf Ohio bash would eventually move to Wyandot Lake, entertaining thousands of guests with wave pools, bikini contents and mechanical surf boards.

World B. Free got his name from the playgrounds of Brooklyn, New York, where a friend took note of his incredible athleticism:

"That name was given to me by Herb Smith," Free explains. "This guy named a lot of guys at the Rucker. I was doing 360 slam dunks and once he saw that he said 'All-World' and the crowd really got into it. So, you had a 'Helicopter' (Herman Knowings) and now you had a 'World.' In 1977, the owner who was willing to try anything, resorted to a "rent-a-player" scheme in an effort to adapt to free agency in baseball. His gamble paid off. After acquiring Oscar Gamble, Richie Zisk and Eric soderholm, the team, which came to be known by the press and fans as the "South Side Hitmen", hit an improbable 192 home runs and finished third in the American League. It was a season that helped to save baseball in hearts of those on the South Side.

During important games, Hagy would even be allowed to climb onto his team's dugout to rally the crowd!

As a cab driver, if an out-of-towner ever entered his cab wearing a a Yankees hat, Wild Bill ordered it removed before accepting the fare.

But it was Louis Armstrong descending from the sky like a god. the ship hugged the bank as if it were driven there by the powerful trumpet beats. 1974 has been dubbed "The Year of the Streaker". In the spring, students at colleges in southern California and Florida were shedding their duds and running naked across campus. The infamous "Streaker of the House" interrupted a meeting of legislators in Hawaii.

Novelty song writer Ray Stevens' most famous hit "The Streak" poked fun at streaking. His goofy song went on to be number one in both the UK and the USA.

The University of Georgia was home to the largest simultaneous streak in history. On March 7, with a chill in the air on campus, 1,543 students along with bystanders on the street decided to go for a naked jog.

The term was coined in an article scribed by Flyers beat writer Jack Chevalier, who wrote of the team's performance that night in Atlanta, "The image of the fightin' Flyers spreading gradually around the NHL, and people are dreaming up wild nicknames. The "Bleacher Bums" is a name given to fans, many of whom spend much of the day heckling, who sit in the bleacher section at Wrigley Field. The group was started in 1967 by dedicated fan Ron Grousl and "mad bugler" Mike Murphy, who is currently a sports radio host mid days on Chicago-based WSCR AM 670 "The Score".

Initially, the group was called "bums" because it referred to a group of fans who were at most games, and since those games were all day games, it was assumed they did not work. Many of those fans were, and are still, students at Chicago colleges.

In the early 1970s, Major League Baseball players seldom, if ever, wore facial hair. The practice had been widespread in the 19th century, but by the early 20th century it was rare for a player to sport a mustache or beard. As detailed in the book Mustache Gang, Oakland Athletics owner Charlie Finley decided to hold a mustache-growing contest within his team. When the A's faced the Cincinnati Reds, whose team rules forbade facial hair, in the 1972 World Series, the media dubbed the series as "the hairs vs. the squares". Thanks in part to the on-field success of the A's in the early 1970s, along with changing fashions, facial hair has again become very common among baseball players.
